Comparing Quantities Using Ratios

Quantities can be compared using ratios. the quantities can be be compared is they are of the same type and in same units. Comparison between two becomes meaningless if they are not of the same kind of they are not expressed in same units. For example it is meaningless to compare 25 pencils to 35 oranges. Also to compare Kg with grams will not give proper results. So before comparing they must be expressed in the same units.

Illustration: Robin worked for 8 hours and Rubin worked for 2 hours. How many times Robin’s working hours as compared to Rubin working hours?

Solution: Working hours of Robin = 8 hours Working hours of Rubin = 2 hours The ratio of working hours of Robin to Rubin = 8 : 2 = 4 : 1.
